Student Life Overview

Our mission at SJ23 is not only to foster the academic success of our students, but also to nurture lifelong Catholic values that build strong character and meaningful relationship with God. In partnership with our families and the Catholic Church, we strive to guide each child as he or she grows and matures in knowledge and faith. Students develop a deep appreciation of the liturgy through active weekly Mass participation and through daily religious instruction, reflection, and prayer. SJ23 students further their spiritual journey by preparing for and receiving the sacrament of first holy Communion and reconciliation. Outside the classroom, students focus on individual and communal spiritual growth through retreats and service.

SJ23 offers many co-curricular and student life enrichment programs in addition to its outstanding core curriculum.

Technology & Innovation

In the realm of education, the infusion of technology seamlessly enhances both traditional and hands-on teaching methodologies, fostering a more enriching educational journey for our students. The incorporation of a diverse range of contemporary digital tools not only complements conventional approaches but also nurtures the cultivation of digital citizens. Within a Catholic context, this integration holds a unique significance, emphasizing the responsibility of students to navigate the digital landscape in alignment with moral values. By embracing technology, we empower our students to develop into conscientious digital citizens, equipped with the skills to thrive in our interconnected world while upholding Catholic principles. Our integrated, hands-on curriculum based on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) engages students of all academic levels. It promotes a deeper understanding of real-world concepts and helps students to become critical thinkers, thoughtful listeners, and effective speakers. In addition to the regular curriculum, middle-school students have electives in the areas of Visual Arts, Coding, Forensics, Extended Enrichment, and more! A student-centered environment dedicated to a deeper understanding of real-world concepts and their relationship to each other. It provides a collaborative meeting space with a multi-media area and includes flexible seating and 3D Printers.

With the addition of the Love Grows Greenhouse, we have enhanced our curriculum and educator resources to a level where a combination of science, technology, engineering, the arts, and/or math are taught cohesively and provide valuable real-world concepts for all students in grades Pre-3 – 8.
...
Hands-on experiences created by implementing a “living” greenhouse engages students in relevant, real-world experiences and applications where they investigate scientific phenomena, engage in collaboration and discussion, and develop models or explanations in order to arrive at solutions. Students take on the roles of scientists, engineers, horticulturists and even nutritionists to experience many real-world applications related to agriculture, sustainability and nature. These hands-on applications provide relevant contexts through which students develop critical problem solving skills.

In addition to the academic benefits, students gain life skills: caring for God’s creation(s), collaborative teamwork to ensure successful outcomes, critical thinking strategies to determine the best possible solutions, self-discipline and a deep sense of responsibility for the entire community. The project is a way to integrate so many things that students are learning in all classes. It turns book learning into nurturing curiosity. It takes them from “show it” to “do it”.

Meet School Resource Officer (SRO) Officer Bergin. Officer Bergin has been with the Port Washington Police Department for 23 years, full-time SRO for the past 3 years. Officer Bergin has trained through the National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO), implementing the “triad” ...concept where responsibilities are divided amongst three areas: public safety educator, mentor/informal counselor, and law enforcement officer. The SRO assignment is unique within the law enforcement profession. Not only are they law enforcement officers, but they are also mentors, counselors and educators who work hard to create relationships with our youth, school officials, and parents to keep our schools safe. Officer Bergin is a valuable member of the PWPD and the Port Washington-Saukville School District & SJ23. The work he does in the schools is immeasurable!

Our third grade students successfully convinced us to embrace the joy of amusement parks, cherish our loved ones, and even consider the practicality of expanding our basements during their persuasive speeches today! Not only did they showcase their ability to articulate persuasive arguments, but ...they also demonstrated growing confidence in addressing larger audiences. We believe that these early experiences in public speaking are invaluable, providing a solid foundation for their future communication skills.
