“I am beyond grateful for what St. John XXIII and the entire staff has done for my family. My kids would not be in the places they are if it weren’t for the dedication and love of the teachers and staff. THANK YOU ALL.”

As you know, 2024 was the year of the Branching Out Community Mural created by community artists, art teachers and the students from the Port Washington-Saukville School District and students from our school. It was an amazing community initiative and we are very proud of the mural and all the work... done by the art teachers and the students. In addition to raising funds for the mural, Paint on Port also raised money to create a video of the project to share with all the schools as a legacy piece. We are so excited to share this exciting news. Dr. Sue (Mrs. Kruske) is a long-time friend and volunteer of the school, and has written a story dedicated to our students. Last Friday, she came to read a portion of the story. We are so incredibly lucky to have such a supportive and dedicated ...community.
Enjoy! 😺❤️

"When my daughters attended this school, I always enjoyed volunteering with the children in the classrooms. As I neared retirement, I hoped to become a volunteer once again, and Mrs. Jentges kindly allowed my wish to come true. I began coming in to the second grade classroom weekly during reading and writing class, helping wherever needed. The children’s energy and enthusiasm were contagious and this became a highlight of my week. We read stories and wrote poetry, letters, and finally, chapter stories. Animals were always a common theme and since I am a retired veterinarian, I was often involved in helping write the animal stories. One day, a second grade gentleman asked why I didn’t write a story, too. The truth was...I had a story to tell. Niles is my real pet. He was adopted from a shelter by my daughter and, of course, things didn’t go to plan. Much of the book is true. However, having been a veterinarian for 30+ years, I was also aware that many people who adopt from shelters really don’t know the process of turning a “stray animal” into a good and healthy pet. Many people underestimate the kindness and dedication of those that rescue animals in need. That story also needed to be told. So Niles the Cat, a rescue story unfolded. The story begins with a fictional account of Niles and his mother and sister being brought into the shelter as strays, meeting other animals in the same situation, being cared for by the staff and thoughtfully adopted out. Once Sarah adopts Niles in the story, the story is true and the ending is happy. I hope you enjoy the story."
Sincerely, Dr. Sue (Mrs. Kruske to the kids).
