Service Projects & Organizations Served
A significant part of SJ23 student and family life is living our faith. We focus on the gifts of each student and challenge him or her to become a compassionate individual committed to justice, compassion, and service. At SJ23, we believe in inspiring one another to lead and serve through our actions every day in the classroom and our community.
At SJ23, our students contribute to the Mass as liturgical ministers and participate in peace prayer services and retreats. SJ23 faculty provides recognition of our students through the “Caught Being Christian” program and public servant recognition. We involve our students in our ministry of serving the community. We have recently served the following community organizations:
- American Heart Association: Jump Rope for Heart
- Cards and Poinsettia Delivery for Parish Homebound
- Catholic Relief Services: Rice Bowl
- Columban Fathers: Missionary Society of St. Columban
- Feed My Starving Children
- Harbor Club Visits
- MACC Fund
- Port Washington Senior Center
- Salvatorian Mission Warehouse
- Soles for Catholic Education
- St. Ben’s Meal Program
- St. Peter’s Food Pantry Food and Clothing Drives
- Wisconsin Humane Society
Our 6th grade students had an incredible experience volunteering at the Open Door Cafe. They helped prep meals and learned the value of service, teamwork, and community. We’re so proud of their hard work and heart!
About the Open Door Cafe: https://www.stjohncathedral.org/index.php/odc/
It is said that when God closes a door, God always opens a window. But at the Open Door Café, we don’t believe that God is a door closer. We believe in a God of goodness without limits. A God who loves without condition or end. A God who pours out love. A God who opens countless windows and doors, all the time. Nevertheless, doors close. Eviction notices are posted. Pink slips are given. Divorce papers are signed. Diagnoses are handed over. Loved ones die. All of these are closed doors that lead to people experiencing poverty, homelessness and hunger.

Our 8th grade students made over 120 lunches for Repairers of the Breach, Greater Milwaukee’s only daytime refuge and resource center for homeless adults. The daytime sanctuary is an empowering place where homeless and at-risk men and women can get the resources they need to get back on track. Whether it be food and clothing for the short-term, or education for the long-term, they provide as many resources as they can.
Students delivered the lunches, toured the facility, and learned more about the vital work Repairers of the Breach does in the community. We’re proud to see our students engaging in service and gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges others face—and the power of compassion in action. This Lenten Season, our goal was for our students to truly pay it forward and help those that are less fortunate. Each grade decided on an organization that they wanted to reach out to and help. Our 5th graders helped put Easter baskets together this morning at our local Food Pantry. We love seeing them live out our school mission!

On behalf of the Student Council, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who donated and participated in our Toy Drive for the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Your kindness and generosity have made a meaningful difference in the lives of young patients and their families during a time when they need it most. Our goal this year was to bring smiles and comfort to these brave children, many of whom are facing difficult health challenges. Thanks to your contributions, we were able to collect an array of toys that will help brighten their days and bring a sense of joy and hope in the hospital environment. Together, we have made a difference, and we are truly grateful for your involvement in this important cause.
